Fed board member vows further rate hike

The US Federal Reserve System (FRS) intends to continue to raise the key rate, said Michelle Bowman, a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors. She believes that a tight monetary policy will reduce inflation and prevent a serious economic downturn.
“Unemployment remains low as we tightened monetary policy and made progress in bringing inflation down. I take this as an encouraging sign that we can bring inflation down without a major economic downturn,” Ms. Bowman said at an event in Florida (quoted by AFP). “But we still have a lot of work to do,” she stressed.
The Fed raised interest rates seven times in 2022. In total, it increased by 4.25 percentage points. Most members of the Fed’s leadership intend to continue to raise rates. The next meeting on this issue is scheduled for January 31-February 1.
