February 2024 became the warmest around the world in the entire history of meteorological observations, reported European monitoring service Copernicus. This February marked the ninth consecutive month in which temperatures exceeded weather records.
The average temperature this February was 13.54 degrees, or 0.81 degrees above the 1991-2020 average. This year’s figure is also 0.12 degrees higher than the average temperature for February 2016, which was considered the warmest on record.
The average temperature across Europe in February was three degrees higher than usual. The weather was significantly warmer in regions of Siberia, parts of North America, much of South America, Africa and western Australia. Data was collected using satellites, weather stations, ships and aircraft around the world.
Copernicus estimates that 2023 will be the warmest year on record. Average global temperatures this year were 1.48°C above pre-industrial levels. The World Meteorological Organization adheres to the same assessment. Global temperatures set new records every month from June to December. July and August were the hottest on record.
