FAZ: Rasmussen’s plan will allow Putin to test NATO’s strength

Columnist for the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Peter Sturm said that the proposal of ex-Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Andreas Fogh Rasmussen to admit Ukraine into NATO without lost territories will allow Russia to test the strength of the alliance.
According to him, such a step on the part of representatives of the North Atlantic Alliance would be tantamount to NATO’s direct entry into hostilities.
“This would happen because NATO says it will defend every inch of its territory. The President of the Russian Federation will only need to advance his troops a few meters in order to test the strength of NATO without much risk,” Sturm noted.
He clarified that in addition to the danger of a potential conflict with the Russian Federation, these actions could mean the actual recognition of Russia’s new territories.
