“Pets should have constant access to drinking water”
The heat in the center of Russia, according to weather forecasts, will continue until the end of the week. Pets suffer from prolonged abnormal weather no less than people and need special care. Pets are constantly thirsty, lose their appetite, become lazy and inactive. Experts gave advice to owners of dogs, cats, rabbits and other furry four-legged animals.
“There will be nothing wrong if you feed pets in the heat only once a day, preferably with light food, dry food,” recommends veterinarian Svetlana Frolova. – But access to drinking water for dogs and cats should be constant. In summer, they consume several times more liquid than at other times of the year.
If possible, you need to update the drink in the bowls as often as possible – not just top up, but rinse the dishes and fill them with fresh water, the doctor recommends.
Comfortable weather for cats and dogs indoors is 20-25 degrees. If it is higher, animal health may be at risk. Therefore, you need to constantly ventilate the apartment. Just remember to pull and fasten the mosquito net on the windows well so as not to tempt the pet to jump out into the fresh air. If the apartment faces the sunny side, draw the curtains – the temperature will drop by 2-3 degrees.
Do not close the door to the bathroom – this is the coolest room in the house. And do not scold your Murka if she takes a fancy to the space, for example, under the sink. The only ones who are contraindicated to lie on a cold tile are old and sick cats. They should not even walk outside under the scorching sun. This category is deadly vulnerable in the literal sense.
But the hardest thing in the heat is large dogs – unlike cats, they require mandatory two-time walks. The owner of two mastiffs, Tatyana Koval, says that even in the morning and evening hours she takes several 1.5-liter bottles of water with her to the street in order to constantly give her pets water to drink and moisten their wool. Heat exchange in dogs occurs mainly through the paws and stomach, so flush these parts as intensively as possible.
However, the body of large animals gets stressed not only because of the heat, but also because of the return to coolness. “Before bathing, after coming from the street, I first wipe my pets and only then put them in the shower, where they rush with terrible force,” Tatyana shares.
In general, if the animal does not like water procedures, it is not necessary to force it. Stress can cause your pet to develop a fever, which can lead to illness or even death.
To reduce body temperature, comb out the undercoat of pets from the back and sides with a slicker, experts recommend. If there is no special device, remove the hair with wet hands. But in any case, do not cut it with a machine. “I do not recommend doing this, because wool protects against ultraviolet radiation and promotes proper heat transfer,” says Svetlana Frolova.
And finally, do not leave pets in the car, even with the windows open, the expert insists. In hot weather, the temperature inside the car rises to dangerous levels in a few minutes, which can lead to heat stroke and death of the pet. There were cases when the owners of animals on the way to the dacha drove into the store and left the car for 15-20 minutes. During this seemingly short time, the smaller brothers, left in a cramped stuffy cabin, died.
