It all depends on the level of GDP and the structure of the economy
Russian economists voiced their opinion on the results of the study of the statistical agency Eurostat. Western independent researchers have calculated that the average wage in the EU last year amounted to just over 33,000 euros per year. For comparison, in Russia in 2021, it lingered at around 9 thousand euros. Is it possible for our economy to close this gap, and if so, in what time frame, “MK” found out from experts.
The Eurostat study also says that the highest salaries were in Luxembourg, Denmark and Ireland, while the lowest were in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. This did not surprise Russian financial analysts at all.
“The level of citizens’ salaries depends on the productivity of the economy,” says economist Mikhail Belyaev. – And one of the main indicators of its effectiveness is the production of GDP per capita. If we compare GDP per capita in Europe and in our country, we will see that we have been dropped to some 20th place.
According to the expert, we will be able to achieve impressive wages only if we improve the structure of the economy and labor productivity.
“The point is not for workers to run around their machines faster, but for the machines to work more efficiently,” says Belyaev. – The technical equipment of labor should be at a high level, but in our country it is not being increased very actively.
According to economist Pavel Kudyukin, the average salary in Russia is generally a fictitious indicator. To assess the real state of affairs, we need to compare it with the median, and then it will immediately become clear to us that the median is only two-thirds of the average, that is, the gap between the smallest and largest salaries in the country is simply huge.
– Commodity economies are generally less efficient than economies with a differential structure, – says the expert. – Where the manufacturing industry is in good standing and the service sector is well developed, the level of wages is always much higher there. Whether the structure of our economy will change, time will tell, but it needs to be measured in decades.
