MK interviewed experienced gardeners, and they named the 5 most important things that must be done in the winter at the dacha.
1. Cover perennials, young fruit tree seedlings and heat-loving shrubs with snow. This year the beginning of winter turned out to be snowy, and perhaps novice gardeners feel that their plants are securely covered. But more experienced summer residents know that the snow is distributed unevenly on the site, so after heavy snowfalls it is necessary to visit the dacha and add snow under those trees and shrubs that are left deprived of this excellent natural insulation. “When I clear the snow from the paths, I throw it on the flower bed; a lot of snow accumulates near the fence, although it is not needed there at all, but under fruit trees, especially young ones, it will never be superfluous. The same can be said about beautiful flowering shrubs. If you want to see wild blooming of deutia, forsythia or weigela in the spring, don’t be lazy to sprinkle some snow on them in winter,” advises our regular dacha expert Natalya Egorkina.
2. Be sure to ventilate the greenhouse in winter. Some summer residents leave the greenhouse open for the winter, believing that this way they will freeze out all pests and plant diseases. Others, on the contrary, do not advise leaving the greenhouse door open, because a strong wind can rip it off its hinges, and the frame of the greenhouse itself can be demolished. But all experienced summer residents advise ventilating the greenhouse in winter. “As soon as enough snow falls, I cover all the soil in the beds in the greenhouse with a thick layer, this is enough for all the microbes to freeze. Well, I also keep the windows open,” says Egorkina.
3. After sudden changes in temperature, ventilate the rose shelter. The Queen of the Garden is a very capricious lady. She is afraid of frost and damping off, and therefore, in order for your rose garden to always be in good health, do not forget to ventilate shelters for roses and other heat-loving shrubs during the winter, especially after temperature fluctuations from minus to plus. Then there will be no mold or fungal infection there. For ventilation, it is enough to make a very small hole, and this procedure lasts no more than an hour, and this should be done during a thaw, and not when frost strikes again.
4. Remove snow from the roof. Even those who have nothing but weeds growing there need to visit their dacha in winter. Because during heavy snowfalls, there is always a danger to the roof – it may not withstand the load of snowfall and sag. “Most summer residents take care of the roof of their house and outbuildings, but they forget about the greenhouse; as a result, by spring the roof sags, and sometimes the whole thing falls under the weight of the snow cover. My advice: clean the paths, don’t be lazy and clean the roof, it will be much cheaper than repairing it later,” says experienced summer resident Maxim Volodin.
5. Protect tree trunks from rodents, and the crown from sticking lumps of snow. If in the summer we protect apple trees, pears and other fruit trees from insect pests, then in the winter they also require our care, only from rats, mice, hares and other rodents who are not averse to eating the roots and bark of trees. To do this, the trunks need to be wrapped in several layers of covering material, which, by the way, will also protect them from sunburn, and the snow around the trees should be properly compacted so that it is difficult for pests to reach the roots. Coniferous trees have their own problems: after heavy snowfalls, entire snowdrifts form on their crowns, which break the tops of the trees. Therefore, a zealous owner will definitely go around the entire garden, where it is necessary to remove snow or even add additional snow, and where it is not needed, he will shake it off and clean it.
