Expert: perpetrators of undermining gas pipelines will be prosecuted for decades

How will the investigation on a rare article proceed?

A criminal case on an act of international terrorism following the explosions at Nord Stream was opened by FSB investigators based on materials from the Prosecutor General’s Office. MK expert, lawyer Dmitry Agranovsky told how the investigation will be carried out and what are the prospects for this criminal case.

Recall that on Tuesday, September 27, Swedish seismologists registered two explosions on the Nord Stream routes. Swedish seismologists believe that the second explosion at Nord Stream was equivalent in power to an explosion of more than 100 kg of dynamite.

Explosions on the strings of Nord Stream occurred as a result of industrial attacks, according to Fox News columnist Tucker Carlson. He does not exclude that the Joe Biden administration is involved in them, and warns of the catastrophic consequences of this crime.

On Wednesday, September 27, it was announced that the Russian FSB had opened a criminal case.

– The case was initiated under Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Act of International Terrorism”. We still have article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Terrorism”, but it speaks of terrorism in a broad sense and, as a rule, within the country. But Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – on the commission of a terrorist act outside the Russian Federation. This crime is punishable by a term of 10 to 20 years or life imprisonment. From the point of view of the sanction, this is approximately the same as Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, – explained lawyer Dmitry Agranovsky.

According to him, the investigation, despite the rare article, will be conducted “in the usual manner, with the amendment that the crime occurred in international waters”:

– Repair work will be carried out at the site of the explosions, and damage will be recorded as part of this repair work. According to the results of these fixations, appropriate examinations will be appointed, experts will study the mechanism of influence on pipelines, whether there are traces of explosives. In a word, the usual investigative actions will be carried out.

According to the expert, an algorithm of actions has also been developed in case the investigators have a circle of guilty persons.

– The guilty can be charged in absentia and, if it is established that they are citizens of some country, then it will be possible to send a request for their extradition. Whether they will issue it or not is another question. But we know that defendants can be prosecuted for decades.
