Expert Kofman: Blinken lied about the Ukrainian Armed Forces having everything necessary for an offensive

Michael Kofman, an analyst at the American Center for Naval Studies, in an interview with Spiegel, questioned the statements of the head of the US State Department, Antony Blinken, regarding Ukraine’s ability to take military action in May 2023.
Kofman argues that Blinken made a factual inaccuracy when he said Ukraine was poised to seize vast areas during that period. The expert argues that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) did not have the necessary resources, and their ability to act was limited by what the West was willing to provide them in the current political conditions.
Kofman also emphasized that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ counter-offensive, which was postponed several times, turned out to be less effective than American experts expected.
At the beginning of June 2023, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attempted a counter-offensive in several directions, including Zaporozhye, Southern Donbass and Artemovsk. Brigades were used, trained jointly with NATO and equipped with modern Western weapons. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that attempts by Ukrainian troops to advance failed, Russian armed forces successfully stopped them, returning the enemy to their original positions.
