Saboteurs could launch a drone from Russian territory

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are increasingly using unmanned aerial vehicles for terrorist attacks on Russian cities. On the night of January 30, another drone was shot down over Bryansk. And the day before, the arrival of a Ukrainian drone was recorded in the Yaroslavl region. An expert in the field of unmanned systems Denis Fedutinov told MK where the Ukrainian drone could have been launched from and what route it flew.

– The expansion of the scale of attacks by Ukrainian kamikaze drones on Russian civilian infrastructure was predictable. In many cases, attacks were carried out on objects located at a range that, in principle, could be overcome by vehicles of the class used by the Ukrainian side.

At the same time, as the attack points move away from the Ukrainian borders, a version using these drones directly from Russian territory may become increasingly likely. As for the events in Yaroslavl, judging by the published footage, a device was involved, most likely of handicraft production, which, in principle, could have been assembled on the territory of our country.

– How do such drones manage to overcome the rings of our air defense?

– Unfortunately, even when attacked from the territory of Ukraine, some drones break through the air defense. This may be due to the fact that their routes are constructed in such a way as to bypass active anti-aircraft missile systems at a maximum distance, as well as to use the terrain features to reduce the time spent in the field of view of air defense systems and so that their operators have practically no time to react remained.

– Is it possible to create and install electronic warfare systems that would jam all these drones?

– The task of ensuring widespread coverage of the country’s territory with means of detecting and countering enemy drones, whether based on air defense systems or electronic warfare systems, is difficult due to the scale of the territory. Therefore, it is still necessary to rank territories and objects according to their significance. Probably the most important of these will be those located directly along the line of combat contact, as well as key administrative and command centers in cities. Full coverage would require enormous financial and time resources.

– Can owners of infrastructure facilities independently ensure their safety? Close the sky somehow.

– Yes, there are periodic discussions that it would be possible to delegate the issues of protecting certain sensitive infrastructure facilities from drones to those security structures – public or private – that provide their protection. The development of events shows that this idea does not lose its relevance.
