Former Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Suret Huseynov has died at the age of 64 in Turkey. He entered the history of the country as the leader of a military rebellion.
During the Karabakh war of 1992-1994, Huseynov commanded the 2nd Army Corps and in 1992 received the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, which he later was deprived of.
Huseynov carried out a coup attempt in June 1993. The President of the country Abulfaz Elchibey and the power of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan were overthrown. Huseynov received the post of prime minister, but a year later he was accused of having links with conspirators from the special police detachment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, after which he left the country.
In 1999, Huseynov was sentenced by the Azerbaijani authorities to life imprisonment, and in 2004 he was pardoned.
