The former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, said that the jury in his case should be ashamed of the verdict.

On Thursday, a jury found the ex-official guilty of two murders and an attempted murder of business competitors in the early 2000s, as well as arms trafficking. The defendant was considered not deserving of indulgence in any of the episodes. The verdict was also passed against other defendants – Andrey Karepov, Marat Kadyrov and Andrey Paley. They were found guilty on all counts, while the jury found Kadyrov deserving of leniency in the assassination episode.

Furgal pleaded not guilty. During the announcement of the verdict, he shouted to the jury: “Aren’t you ashamed? Well, shame on you! Shame on you!”

Furgal’s lawyer said that the defense will try to seek an appeal not in international, but in Russian courts. In particular, it is planned to appeal formal violations of the process. The lawyer also said that he was confident in Furgal’s innocence both as his representative and as a person.

The verdict is scheduled to be announced on February 6.
