Former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace, shortly before his resignation, took measures to disrupt the agreement on the purchase of American Chinook helicopters, RIA Novosti reports citing the Times publication.
Thus, the aforementioned agreement provided for the purchase of 14 Boeing Chinook H-47 extended-range helicopters. Deliveries were supposed to start in 2026, the Times writes, citing sources in the British government.
As noted, Wallace initiated the cancellation of this agreement, arguing that it was necessary to implement a program to reduce the costs of the Department of Defense. He also informed his American colleague Lloyd Austin about this, the article says.
At the same time, Wallace was also dissatisfied with the fact that Washington did not support his candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General, follows from the message.
Earlier, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace left his post. As the British media wrote, there are currently two main candidates for the post of British Minister of Defense – Minister for Energy Security and Climate Neutrality Grant Shapps and former head of department Liam Fox.
