Every fourth Russian would like his child to live in Moscow or St. Petersburg, follows from the results of a survey by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM). The share of those who chose Moscow was 14%, while Petersburg was named by every tenth respondent.
Among the main reasons why Russians would prefer the country’s two largest cities are the opportunity to get a good education (42%), provide a decent income (53%), “break into power” or become an influential person (39%). “Such results cannot be considered exclusively positive. Potentially, this could provoke the development of an already existing confrontation between the capital and other cities, the population of which feels left out, since supposedly all taxes go to the maintenance of the city,” the VTsIOM noted.
Any other large city in Russia was preferred by 21% of respondents, while almost half of them would choose a city with a million inhabitants. Slightly more Russians (23%) would like their child to live in a small town, while only 10% of respondents chose the countryside. Most often, respondents indicated the area outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg because of the good environmental situation (67%) and the ability to solve the housing problem (48%).
Least of all, Russians would like their child to live abroad – only 7% of such people turned out to be. This is the minimum since the beginning of VTsIOM observations: since 2006, the number of Russians who have chosen “abroad” for their children has fluctuated from 9% to 12%.
