Arianespace announced the failed launch of the European Vega-C launch vehicle. The rocket crashed due to an engine failure. What exactly happened is still unknown.
The launch was carried out today, December 21, from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. “Approximately 2 minutes 27 seconds after launch, an anomaly occurred in the (engine) Zefiro 40, ending the Vega C mission. Data analysis is now underway to determine the cause of the failure,” the company said on Twitter.
Vega-C was supposed to launch two high-resolution Earth observation satellites, Pleiades Neo 5 and 6, into orbit. The devices were created by the aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
The Vega-C booster is 34.8 meters long and weighs almost 210 tons. It is capable of placing a cargo weighing about 2200 kg in a polar orbit at a height of 700 km. The budget of the European Space Agency for the next three years includes €2.8 billion for work on launch vehicles Vega-C and Ariane-6.
