European satellite ERS-2 deorbits over the North Pacific Ocean

The European Earth remote sensing satellite ERS-2 left orbit on the evening of February 21, reports European Space Agency (ESA). The agency’s material says that the satellite “fell into pieces.”
According to ESA, the satellite entered the Earth’s atmosphere at 20:17 Moscow time at an altitude of 80 km, and then left orbit over the North Pacific Ocean, in the area between Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands. “This was the best option for disposing of the satellite, given its design in the 1980s,” the material says.
ERS-2 was launched in April 1995 from a spaceport in French Guiana. According to ESA, the satellite managed to provide the necessary data on the Earth’s land surface, ocean temperature, ozone layer and the extent of polar ice.
