At the end of a race disrupted by a fall and a long interruption to treat several injured competitors and repair the track, Clara Copponi won a silver medal in the omnium event of the European Championships in Munich.
In the lead before the last event, in particular thanks to her first place in tempo and elimination, Clara Copponi saw the Italian Rachele Barbieri pass her in the last part of the points race. Copponi totaled 171 points, three less than Barbieri (174) but four more than Poland’s Daria Pikulik (167) in bronze.
A few minutes later, Mathilde Gros also had to settle for silver, beaten two sets to one by Germany’s Emma Hinze. The two track riders were separated by the photo-finish.
In the previous round, the 23-year-old tricolor sprinter had subdued the vice-world champion Lea Sophie Friedrich in two rounds. A sign that this precocious talent, bronze medalist at the 2019 Worlds at not even 20 years old, is picking up the thread of her progress, which has been hampered for a few seasons.
After the disappointment of the Tokyo Olympics last summer, where she was eliminated in the round of 16, her victory in the Nations Cup in Cali (Colombia) in July heralded her rebound.
His performance on Monday in Munich confirms this. And her Championships are not yet over, the Provençale can add a third continental keirin title to her collection on Tuesday (2018 and 2019).
