European Commissioner: the EU may approve 50 billion euros for Ukraine

The leaders of the European Union countries are ready to review and possibly approve the budget until 2027, which provides for the allocation of 50 billion euros for Ukraine. Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Budget, said this in an interview with Reuters. He noted that Hungary’s consent to this decision is important, since it directly affects the country’s national interests.

According to Khan, Hungary is forced to support the budget revision, given its impact on border defense against the flow of migrants. In the context of the updated budget, 15 billion euros are allocated to support border security policies throughout the European Union.

Khan stressed that the budget package being discussed will not be limited to just funding for Ukraine. Its components also include funds for migration issues and support for countries such as Turkey, with which Hungary maintains friendly relations.

Asked about a possible Hungarian veto, Khan mentioned that the European Commission had a “Plan B”, although he did not reveal specific details to avoid opening up the possibility of discussing this alternative.

The European Commissioner also confirmed that 26 EU countries can provide assistance to Ukraine within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement. He expressed confidence that Hungary, despite its conditions, will not remain aloof from the support provided by the international community.

Let us recall that earlier the European Commission proposed to allocate 50 billion euros for Ukraine until 2027. A decision on this issue must be approved by all EU leaders, and a discussion of this issue is planned at the summit, which will be held on December 14-15. Hungary expressed its readiness to veto this initiative and presented its demands, including the unfreezing of the 30 billion euros allocated for it.
