European Commission urges to freeze financial aid to Hungary

The European Commission issued a statement on Wednesday recommending that EU governments freeze Hungary’s access to €7.5 billion in subsidies. These are subsidies paid from the EU’s Balanced Development Fund. The reason for this freeze is not at all the country’s resistance to various sanctions initiatives of European officials, but the Hungarian government’s insufficiently active fight against corruption.
As the structure headed by Ursula von der Leyen notes in a statement, she nevertheless came to the conclusion that Hungary did not fulfill a number of necessary conditions for receiving subsidies, and in general, “the effectiveness of the anti-corruption agency raises questions.”
“A decision was made to freeze 65% of all payments under the three operational programs under the EU Sustainable Development Fund, which corresponds to €7.5 billion,” sum up the representatives of the EC.
However, Hungary probably still has time to improve: now the EC proposal must be considered by the EU Council by December 19.
