Europe has updated a new record temperature maximum
On August 11, 2021, a new heat record for Europe was recorded in the Italian city of Siracusa. The air temperature reached +48.8°, which was officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the UN. The previous record, which was +48°, was set in Greece in 1977. WMO noted this fact in its message issued in Geneva.
The record has only now been confirmed. As WMO rapporteur on climate and weather extremes, Professor Randall Cerveny, explained, in most cases, confirming a record requires “lengthy procedures.” “This painstaking assessment provides critical confidence that global records are being recorded as a result of correctly performed measurements,” the professor said.
I wrote about this in my Telegram– channel meteorologist Mikhail Leus.
