Euphoria star Angus Cloud dies unexpectedly

Euphoria star Angus Cloud, who was found dead in his home at the age of 25, was so heartbroken after the death of his Irish father that he was too “traumatized” to attend the ceremony of scattering his ashes, family friends said.

The 25-year-old actor, who was found dead at his California home earlier this week, was “very emotional” as he struggled to come to terms with the death of his father, Conor Hickey, according to loved ones.

According to the Daily Mail, the star of the HBO series Euphoric, in which he played drug dealer Fesco O’Neill, flew to Ireland with his mother and twin sisters to spread his parent’s ashes on a 100-acre farm still owned by his late father.

While other members of the family attended a brief ceremony at a farm in Laurelstown, County Meath, Angus Cloud hid in his hotel room about three miles away.

Family friend Mick Gleason said: “He was just so traumatized that he couldn’t attend. He was in a very bad condition and in complete shock. He was in such a fragile state and was struggling with the death of his father. He was like a rabbit caught in the headlights and just couldn’t come to terms with his loss. I sat down next to him and said he was the man of the family now and he just couldn’t handle it. He was a broken man.”

Another friend added: “I think that returning to his father’s homeland and everything that happened there was just an overwhelming test for him. He could not survive the final farewell to his father. It’s terrible that he felt so depressed because that his own life had come to an end.”

Angus was later able to regain his composure and was taken back to the family farm by his aunt to spread some of his father’s ashes.

The artist was also able to attend two other private ceremonies as Hickey’s extended family said goodbye to Conor. One happened in the cemetery, where the ashes were scattered over the graves of his parents, and the other in County Offaly, where the Hickey family comes from. According to the Daily Mail, Conor Hickey died of cancer on May 18 at the age of 65. The deceased was cremated in a private ceremony in Oakland, California, and his wife Lisa later held a memorial service attended by more than 100 people at the marina near their home.

Conor Hickey has lived in Oakland, California since the early 1980s after emigrating to the US from his native Irish village in County Meath. Angus Cloud and his twin sisters Molly and Fiona were born in the USA.

Family members said Angus struggled with suicidal thoughts after the passing of his father, who was referred to as “his best friend”.

Funeral attendees who saw Angus on a weekend trip to County Meath said he was in a “highly emotional state”.

The actor and his family were staying at the Kettle Country House, a place he knew well and had booked several times on previous trips to Ireland. Hotel staff say the actor appeared “very upset” and was “very quiet” during his stay at the hotel.

“We did see him, but he didn’t actually talk to anyone and was very quiet,” a hotel employee said.

His late father’s sisters Gay, Mary and Margaret, along with friends from Ashbourne Rugby Club, where Conor was a popular player, attended the private ceremony. The group went to one of the fields next to the two-story house at the entrance to the farm to scatter the ashes.

Angus was able to join family and friends for a second ceremony when the ashes were scattered over the graves of Conor Hickey’s parents in the vast Glasnevin Cemetery near Dublin.

Friends of the family do not expect Angus’ own ashes to be scattered in County Meath.

His cousin Gerald Hugh, owner of a pub in Offaly’s Banagher County, said we would miss the young actor. He told MailOnline: “We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Angus, who left behind so many heartbroken families and friends. He was a huge talent and kindhearted soul, we will all miss him. Last summer we spent a wonderful night at the JJ Houghs pub on family reunion and those memories we will cherish forever. He was as Irish as can be, he even did a scene with me for my annual pub Christmas commercial.”

Family friend Noel McLaughlin told MailOnline: “Angus loved going back to County Meath with his dad, who made it a point to come back every year. He really liked it here and the two went hunting in the fields together. What happened is tragic and Angus was very upset when he was here. It will depend on his mother where his resting place will be.”

Angus Cloud, who has starred in several films that have yet to hit the screens, including Scream 7, paid tribute to this father on social media in one of his last social media posts just two weeks before his own death. He shared a touching snap of his smiling father in a red hoodie and sweatpants.

The actor and his family flew into Dublin Airport on July 19 and stayed at the Kettle County House for five nights. They returned to the US on 23 July. One of his aunts came from her home in Canada, another from Aberdeen in Scotland, and another from abroad, from Derry in Northern Ireland.

Angus was found unconscious at the Hickey family home in Auckland by his mother, Lisa, a former university professor. Lisa was reported to have informed Oakland police of a possible overdose during an emergency call. The actor was declared dead at the scene. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is due later this week.
