The European Commission (EC) said that EC President Ursula von der Leyen, after consultations with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, announced a tripling of humanitarian aid for Gaza.

The EC will immediately increase its current humanitarian aid for Gaza by €50 million, bringing the total assistance to more than €75 million. The EC will continue to work closely with the UN and its agencies to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it in the Gaza Strip.

Von der Leyen stressed that the commission supports Israel’s right to self-defense against the terrorist group Hamas, in full respect for international humanitarian law, and is making every effort to ensure support for civilians in Gaza.

The October 7 attack by the radical Hamas group on southern Israel led to bloodshed. In response to this, the Israeli army (IDF) launched a military operation against Hamas. It is now known that Israel is preparing to conduct a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.
