Officials demand confirmation of the policy of sanctions against athletes of Russia and Belarus
On November 1, the ministers of sports of the European Union countries sent a letter to the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, demanding confirmation of the position of the IOC on the exclusion of athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international competitions.
In a letter signed by the sports ministers of Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden are concerned about the possible return of Russians and Belarusians to some international sports tournaments.
At the same time, officials refer to the Olympic Charter, citing: “The goal of Olympism is to put sport at the service of the harmonious development of mankind in order to create a peaceful society that cares about the preservation of human dignity.”
The letter asks the IOC Executive Board to reiterate its position, expressed on February 28, 2022, that sports federations around the world should not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions. “We are concerned that the general approach in the sporting world, including that recommended by the IOC, is being questioned or even violated by some organizations,” the letter says.
