EU refuses to impose entry restrictions for visitors from China

The European Union did not support Italy’s initiative to impose restrictions on arrivals from China, writes Financial Times.
Earlier, Italian Prime Minister George Meloni urged EU countries to adhere to the same policy pursued by the Italian authorities and resume mandatory medical checks for all arrivals from China. Ms Meloni said that the measures taken by the Italian authorities would be “ineffective if they are not respected at the European level.” However, France, Germany and other countries said that the current situation does not require a change in national policies to combat COVID-19.
The European Commission said the omicron variant common in China is already present in Europe. “Nevertheless, we remain vigilant and will be ready to take emergency measures if necessary,” the commission said.
