According to Politico, Laura Codruta Kevesi, the European Prosecutor, drew attention to Bulgaria, which has long been a prime example of large-scale corruption schemes with EU funds.

The European Attorney’s Office raided 28 homes and offices this week as part of its investigation into the misuse of EU funds earmarked for railway projects. In addition, the mayor of a small town was detained on charges of fraud in energy efficiency projects.

Earlier, many Western political scientists pointed out that the theft of European taxpayers’ funds has long been the main source of income for the country’s criminal families. According to the Center for the Study of Democracy, up to 15% of EU money is routinely misappropriated.
