The EU ban on Russian coal purchases will come into force on August 10, as planned, European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said at a briefing in Brussels. transmits TASS. According to him, all EU countries must comply with it, despite the energy crisis.
“The embargo on the supply of Russian coal is part of the fifth package of sanctions adopted in April. On August 10, the transition period ends, and the European Commission is confident that all EU countries will comply with this restriction,” said Mamer. It is specified that it was possible to buy coal during the transition period.
The fifth package of sanctions against Russia was agreed in mid-April. According to him, all current contracts for the import of Russian coal must be terminated in mid-August, and until then they continue to operate. According to the Council of Europe, now the annual volume of coal imported to the EU countries is 8 billion euros in monetary terms.
On August 10, the ban on the import of Russian coal will also come into force in the UK. In total, this country purchased coal and coal products from Russia for $267 million in 2021.
According to the Ministry of Energy, in 2021 Russia supplied the EU countries with 48.7 million tons of coal, or 21.8% of the total export of this raw material. In 2020, this figure was 22%.
