EU court annulled sanctions against Prigozhin’s mother

The European Court of Justice annulled the sanctions imposed against the mother of the founder of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin, Violetta Prigozhina. The court’s decision published Wednesday on his website.
As follows from the document, even if Prigozhin “bears responsibility for actions that undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine,” the connection between Violetta Prigozhina and her son is based solely on their relationship, and this is not enough to justify her inclusion in the sanctions list.
According to the Council of the EU, the mother of the PMC founder owned the Concord Management and Consulting company, which belongs to the Concord group founded by Prigozhin. The woman also owned other businesses associated with the businessman. The court, following the suit of Prigozhin’s mother, found that since 2017 she has not been the owner of Concord Management and Consulting, although she owned shares in the enterprise.
“Furthermore, the Council cannot demonstrate that she, at the date of the impugned acts, owned other businesses associated with her son,” the document says.
Violetta Prigozhina came under EU sanctions on February 24, 2022. Then the restrictions also affected the wife of businessman Lyubov Prigozhina.
The United States imposed sanctions against PMC Wagner back in 2017. In 2016, its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin fell under the restrictions. At the end of December 2022, the United States tightened sanctions against the organization in connection with its participation in hostilities in Ukraine.
