EU countries purchased €29 billion worth of gas and oil from Russia – Kommersant

In 2023, EU countries purchased oil, petroleum products and gas from Russia in the amount of more than €29 billion. This amount included Russian hydrocarbons not subject to sanctions. These statistics are provided by the Eurostat service, which drew attention to RBC.
Trade turnover between EU countries and Russia last year decreased in value terms by 2.9 times compared to 2022. Back then, amid sanctions, world oil prices averaged $100 per barrel. As a result, Russia earned more than €90 billion from the sale of hydrocarbons to the EU. At the same time, compared to 2021, the turnover of the EU and Russia decreased by 2.8 times. Imports of Russian goods to the EU amounted to €50.64 billion, and EU exports to Russia amounted to €38.32 billion.
After the start of the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict, the European Union introduced 12 packages of sanctions against Russia. According to the European Commission, €147 billion of the previous trade turnover with Russia came under restrictions. At the same time, the share of European Union countries in Russia’s trade turnover after the introduction of restrictions decreased by more than half – from 36% to 15%. Trade with countries friendly to Russia increased 1.7 times, from 46% to 77%, said the head of the Ministry of Economy, Maxim Reshetnikov, in February.
EU countries plan to adopt the 13th package of sanctions against Russia by February 24. The day before the newspaper Financial Times citing sources, it was reported that EU ambassadors were unable to approve the new package against it due to the position of Hungary, which does not support sanctions against Chinese companies.
