EU Council extends sanctions against Russia for six months

The Council of the European Union decided to extend the sanctions against Russia for six months. This follows from statements on the council website.
“The Council today decided to extend for six months, until January 31, 2024, restrictive measures against specific sectors of the economy of the Russian Federation,” the message says.
The statement recalled that the sanctions were first introduced in 2014 and significantly expanded since February 2022. The restrictions apply to trade, finance, technology, luxury goods, etc. In addition, the EU banned the import of oil and certain petroleum products from Russia and blocked the work of some Russian banks, the council stressed.
The sanctions were last extended on 27 January.
In February 2022, Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine. Against this background, the US, EU, UK and other countries imposed sanctions against Russia. As the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen reported, Western countries have frozen 300 billion euros of reserves of the Central Bank of Russia and 19 billion euros of private funds of Russian businessmen.
At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that the West has failed to achieve its goal. In March, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin declaredthat the Russian economy is successfully resisting Western sanctions, now business is rebuilding logistics and cooperating with responsible partners.
