“The Council today decided to extend for six months, until July 31, 2023, restrictive measures against specific sectors of the economy of the Russian Federation. These sanctions, first introduced in 2014 in response to Russian actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, have been significantly expanded since February 2022.
The council recalled that these restrictions were significantly expanded from February 2022 against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine. “They currently include a wide range of sectoral measures, including restrictions on finance, energy, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transport and luxury goods,” the EU added.
In 2014, a referendum was held in Crimea, as a result of which the peninsula became part of Russia. As a result of the military conflict in the Donbass, parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions declared their independence as the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics. Russia recognized their independence on February 21, 2022, and on February 24 launched a special operation in Ukraine.
