The Estonian government believes that all monuments to Soviet wars should be demolished as soon as possible, informs “RIA Novosti” with reference to the country’s Prime Minister Kaya Kallas.

“The ultimate goal is clear – to remove the Red Army monuments from the places where they are now,” the politician said. According to her, now there are about 200-400 monuments to Soviet soldiers in the country, which is more than the initial estimates of the authorities. The Estonian government is “unanimous” on this issue and also wants to make the demolition process as minimally escalated and as painless as possible, Kallas stressed. Events since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine have “reopened the old wounds of the Estonian people,” which, she says, are reminiscent of monuments to Soviet soldiers, she said.

The prime minister also touched upon the topic of the monument to the T-34 tank, which is located in Narva. According to her, honoring the dead is not forbidden, but this should be done where it is a suitable place, for example, in a cemetery. “The tank is a murder weapon. This is not a memorial. There are not even military graves under it, ”Kallas emphasized.

On July 21, it became known that in Estonia they were going to demolish all monuments to Soviet soldiers. If there are remains under the monument, they will be reburied. The fate of each specific monument will be dealt with by local self-government.

Despite this government decision, Narva Mayor Katri Raik stated that the city authorities would not move a tank from the city, handed over words politics national broadcaster ERR. She said that most citizens would be against it, and also noted that there are enough other problems in the city.

In addition to Estonia, it was decided to demolish monuments to Soviet soldiers in Latvia and Lithuania. 26 May The Saeima of Latvia in the first reading supported a bill that obliges the municipal authorities to demolish Soviet monuments by November 15. Earlier, in April, the same head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture Simonas Kairis signed an order according to which it would be allowed to demolish the Soviet monument, informed Sputnik Lithuania.
