Estonian Kaya is not going to repent

On Tuesday, it became known that not only well-known politicians and journalists are already pointing Kaya Kallas to the door, but the country’s president also believes that it will be better for everyone if the head of the government cabinet resigns.

At a meeting with the chairmen of parliamentary parties, Estonian President Alar Karis admitted that the head of government should have resigned at the very beginning of the scandal, otherwise he would not have led the country’s political system to such a serious crisis.

“This would save her, her loved ones, the efficiency of the government and the credibility of the messages that Estonia sends in the international arena. But everyone in such a situation makes his own choice, assessing the seriousness of the moral problem himself,” he said.

In response, Kaya Kallas politely advised the president to keep his opinions to himself.

“I would like to politely point out to the president that I stand by my opinion. I will be prime minister as long as my coalition partners and my party support me – and so far they have not given me reason to doubt this, ”the Estonian Amazon wrote on her personal blog.

However, Kaya Kallas is not completely honest with her voters: coalition partners also want her to leave the government as soon as possible.

Raimonds Kaljulaid, a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament – ed.) from the Social Democratic Party of Estonia, expressed doubts about further support for the government of Kai Kallas.

“I don’t understand how it is possible that the leader of one of the largest and most influential political parties in Estonia, as well as the prime minister, could not behave so well in a crisis,” the MP said.

The politician is sure that the scandal showed Kallas’ weakness and her inadequacy for her position.

“In the past, Kaya Kallas was compared to Margaret Thatcher, but, unfortunately, in the current scandal, we see so far only Liz Truss at best. I have consistently supported our Prime Minister in voting in the Riigikogu since 2019. But now I have no answer to the question of whether I want to do this in the future,” said a member of the Social Democrats faction.

Another politician, Peep Petersen, the former Minister of Health and Labor, generally stated categorically that Kaya Kallas should leave because she showed “lack of integrity and responsible attitude.”

A person who is not privy to the nuances of Estonian politics will probably not understand why everyone is so angry at the “poor” woman.

Well, yes, the story came out ugly: from the podium she urged everyone to turn off business with Russia, and her husband herself was a shareholder of a logistics company that made money just on transit traffic from the EU to Russia. But it was not she herself who was sitting at the steering wheel of the truck, and not even her husband.

“You just need to know Kaya, with what pathos she broadcast day and night on television on this topic. And then suddenly such an embarrassment! It turns out that she herself and her husband have a stigma in the cannon, ”explains Alexander, a Tallinn journalist.

According to him, on the eve of last year’s Christmas, Kaya Kallas made another Russophobic speech and threatened everyone who still continued to work with our country. “We have given clear instructions that there should be no activity with Russian companies,” she said at the time. Apparently, her husband did not hear these words.

“I think that she is being hounded so much now by her opponents, and, supposedly, by her fellow comrades-in-arms, because Kaya was caught in a clear lie. She has lied many times before, but no one has ever caught her by the hand, ”Alexander continues to think.

However, he says that Kai Kallas’s biggest lie is not whether or not she knew about her husband’s business with Russia, but that the prime minister is trying to distract people from the plight of the Estonian economy with the help of full Russophobia.

“Do you know that our electricity costs 11 times more than in Finland? How many businesses have closed in the last year? At the same time, the government is going to raise taxes and reduce budget spending on social needs and to help its own enterprises. We are all afraid that the government of Kai Kallas will lead the country to economic collapse, which is why so many people now want, under any plausible pretext, her resignation,” the journalist says.

By the way, Alexander did not mention yet another reason why Kai Kallas’s “blood” is now being demanded in Estonia. that Russophobic flame, which the Estonian prime minister herself and her political associates fanned so diligently, is now ready to devour her own career as well.

Athletes, artists, and even ordinary citizens have long been banned from having any contact with Russia. And those who disobey face severe punishment. For example, recently the Estonian Curling Union banned member of the Estonian national team Mikhail Vlasov from participating in competitions until the end of the 2023-2024 season. for the fact that he recently competed in Russia as a representative of Estonia.

The story of the musician Andres Mustonen looks even more vile: because he gave a concert in Russia, he was actually removed from the broadcast network, and indeed from cultural life in general. He even had to publicly repent for speaking in Russia.

The question is, if society and the authorities act so cruelly towards ordinary people, then why should there be indulgence in relation to representatives of the authorities and their relatives?

“Kaya Kallas says her husband’s firm hasn’t broken any laws. But, sorry, Vlasov and Mustonen did not break the law either. They were convicted and their careers were ruined for violating certain moral principles. The very ones that forbid having any business with Russia. An absurd situation arises: the requirements for the moral character of ordinary citizens turn out to be higher than in the case of the most influential politician in the country, ”one of the members of parliament and a member of the special commission of the Riigikogu, which considered the case of Kai Kallas and her husband and issued her an acquittal, is indignant. a verdict that so outraged the Estonian society with double standards.

In fact, the problem is not at all in double standards, but in the fact that the European state, which declares complete democracy, cultural pluralism and individual freedom in words, in fact tightly controls its citizens, telling them with whom and where to do business, on what stages and in what competitions to compete, with whom you can be friends and who you should love. No wonder that even the most devoted adherent of this social hell – Kaya Kallas – decided to cheat a little.
