The Estonian Police and Border Guard Department will ensure that none of the approximately 3,600 Russians who are likely to be ordered to leave Latvia end up in Estonia. About it reported ERR portal.
“In fact, the desire of the Latvian state in relation to these citizens is that they do not go somewhere to the Baltic countries, but return to their homeland. And if this is a Russian citizen, then Russia must accept him, Russia cannot refuse him,” explained the head of the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Lauri Läänemets.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that he does not know how Latvians will be able to organize the deportation process. However, he stressed that Estonia will not accept Russian citizens.
“They need a residence permit to live here and all other rights and conditions must be met. But we have imposed sanctions against Russian citizens, we are not going to give this to them,” said Läänemets.
According to the portal, about 3,600 Russians permanently residing in Latvia may receive a letter this week with an order to leave the country within 90 days.
In September 2022, the Latvian Seimas (parliament) approved amendments that shorten the period of permanent residence permits issued to Russians until September 1, 2023. To stay in Latvia, it is necessary, among other things, to pass an exam on knowledge of the state language at level A2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation named These amendments are discriminatory and violate fundamental international legal norms. On September 4 it was reported that on the first attempt the Latvian language exam didn’t pass 61% of Russian citizens. September 14 Sejm approved amendments extending by two years the period during which Russians can take the language exam.
