Estonian authorities equate the desire to obtain Russian citizenship with a threat to national security. This statement was made on Friday, December 1, by the head of the Estonian government, Kaja Kallas.
The politician confirmed the statement of the country’s Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets that residents of the republic who have accepted Russian citizenship could be deported.
According to Kallas, Tallinn is indeed looking for options to legalize deportation for the decision to obtain Russian citizenship, since it associates this with supporting terrorism and a threat to the republic.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has previously repeatedly indicated on the anti-Russian orientation of Estonia’s policy. In particular, the country decided to be the first in the European Union to legalize the confiscation of Russian assets. However, Moscow promised that it would quickly intensify extremely sensitive measures in response.
At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna, called on the citizens of the country do not travel to the Russian Federation due to the possible closure of the border, since then Estonians risk staying in Russia for a long time.
