General of the Estonian Defense Forces complained about the “Russian” battalion
The commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, General Veiko-Vello Palm, in a conversation with the Sakala newspaper, complained about the large number of Russian-speaking soldiers in one of the battalions.
He clarified that unique problems were caused by the opportunity given to recruits to choose their place of service.
“Naturally, the military personnel from the eastern cities of Estonia for the most part preferred to serve close to home. At some point, there were much more Russian-speaking fighters in the Viru battalion than Estonian-speaking ones. However, we have already solved this problem and are no longer engaged in the dispersal of recruits,” Palm noted.
According to him, soldiers whose communication language is “not Estonian” currently come to this battalion mainly from Tallinn. He emphasized that soldiers who do not speak Estonian “do not speak Russian.”
