Erdogan intends to discuss with Putin the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wants to discuss the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“We will discuss this issue (the situation around the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant) with respected Mr. Putin, and we will specifically ask him about this so that Russia makes its contribution in this regard as an important step towards world peace,” quote his RIA Novosti.

Erdogan also added that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should closely monitor what is happening and participate in resolving the crisis.

The day before, the first personal meeting of the leaders of Turkey and Ukraine since the beginning of the special military operation took place. Following its results, Zelensky announced in his Telegram channel that politicians discussed the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the grain issue. Also, as a result of the conversation, a memorandum was signed between Ukraine and Turkey, which implies their cooperation in the restoration of destroyed socio-economic significant infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, and the parameters of a possible IAEA mission to the ZNPP were agreed upon.

Immediately after the bilateral talks, a trilateral meeting was held with the participation of Guterres, which lasted only 40 minutes. The focus of politicians was the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. After this meeting, Erdogan declaredthat he intends to discuss with Putin the results of these negotiations.

On August 16, it became known about the start of preparations for a new IAEA mission to the ZNPP. The UN also announced its readiness to ensure the visit of the organization to the station through Kyiv, with the consent of Russia and Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry objected that it was unsafe to deliver the mission through the capital of Ukraine, since the path from Kyiv to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant runs through the front line.
