Erdogan held talks with Biden ahead of NATO summit

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held telephone conversations with his American counterpart Joe Biden on the eve of the NATO summit, the administration of the Turkish leader said.
“During the talks, issues of membership of Ukraine and Sweden in NATO, supplies of [истребителей] F-16, Turkey’s full integration into the EU,” the representative office said (quote according to TASS).
In addition, the presidents agreed to meet on the sidelines of the alliance’s summit “for a detailed discussion of bilateral and regional relations.”
The NATO summit will be held from 11 to 12 July in Vilnius (Lithuania). After joining Russia in the fall of 2022, the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine would apply for NATO membership in an expedited manner.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with Sky News that NATO member countries would come out with a unified position on Ukraine’s membership in the alliance at the upcoming summit. He also noted that “many allies have different positions and views, but this is nothing new.”
On July 8, after a meeting with Zelensky, which took place on July 7, the Turkish President declaredthat Ukraine deserves NATO membership. In addition, he stated that Turkey has made the greatest efforts to end the conflict through negotiations on the basis of international law. He recalled the first meetings of Russian-Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul in March last year and the launch of a grain initiative through Turkey’s mediation.
