Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is forced to cancel several campaign trips and speeches due to health problems. In a tweet on April 26, he announced his decision. Erdogan expressed regret over the impossibility of meeting with the residents of Kirikkaleli, Yozgat and Sivas, and asked for their forgiveness.
The Turkish leader said that Vice President Fuat Oktay would take part in these trips instead of him. He expressed hope to continue his campaign trips on April 27, but according to Al-monitor and Euronews, he also canceled those plans for Thursday.
One of the canceled trips was to attend a fuel loading ceremony at Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Mersin. Instead of attending in person, Erdogan plans to speak at the ceremony via video link.
Also, due to the president’s health problems, a joint broadcast on Euro D, ATV Europe, NTV Europe and TRT World channels, in which Erdogan was supposed to take part, was canceled.
Recall that on April 26, during a live broadcast of a television pre-election speech, Erdogan became ill. The president himself later stated that he had contracted the stomach flu. Some media reported on the alleged heart attack and hospitalization of Erdogan, however, the public relations department of the Turkish President denied these claims.
Currently, the election campaign is actively carried out in Turkey, and the presidential elections are scheduled for May 14. On March 16, Erdogan was officially nominated as a candidate for the presidency of Turkey for a new term. The opposition nominated its candidate, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
