Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday, January 25, officially approved Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s membership in NATO. The corresponding decree was published on Thursday, January 25, in the official government gazette Resmi Gazete.

The document comes into force from the date of its publication, and the implementation of its provisions is ensured by the head of state, the government gazette says.

This means that the process of Turkey’s approval of Sweden’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance has officially been completed.

Earlier, the director of the Institute of Contemporary State Development, Dmitry Solonnikov, noted that Sweden has nothing to do with Turkey’s delay in making a decision on its NATO membership. The expert believes that this was a bargaining between Turkey and the United States, in which Ankara achieved a number of preferences — in particular, a tranche of $10 billion.

For Sweden to join NATO, all that remains is to wait for the ratification of the corresponding protocol by Hungary. However, the speaker of the Hungarian parliament, László Ksver, said that the situation is not extraordinaryand therefore it makes no sense to convene an urgent meeting on this issue.
