Erdogan and Pashinyan agreed to continue efforts to achieve peace in the region

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone conversation, reported in the Telegram channel of the Armenian government.

The leaders of Armenia and Turkey discussed relations between the two countries and regional issues.

“During the conversation, the leaders of the two countries emphasized that achieving long-term peace and stability in the region will contribute to the development and prosperity of all countries in the region,” the statement said. It is noted that the parties agreed to continue “diplomatic efforts” in this direction.

The day before, at a press conference following the G20 summit, Erdogan statedthat Armenia’s actions in Nagorno-Karabakh are wrong and cannot be tolerated. Then he added that during negotiations with Pashinyan it will be noted that it is impossible to accept elections in the parliament of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).

On September 9, the NKR National Assembly elected Samvel Shahramanyan as President of the Republic. After this, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry condemned the holding of the elections and called on the international community to give a political assessment of Armenia’s steps. The authorities called the holding of elections a violation of the Constitution of the republic and its laws, as well as the norms and principles of international law.

Since the end of August, Baku and Yerevan have accused each other of shelling in the Karabakh region. Pashinyan, in connection with the concentration of Azerbaijani troops, stated that Baku “demonstrates its intention to start a new military provocation against Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia.”
