Officials from the internal political bloc of the presidential administration (AP) of the Russian Federation were invited to replace their iPhones with smartphones from other manufacturers by the end of March. According to Kommersant, this information was given to officials at the beginning of the month. According to one of the sources of the publication, it is possible that the leadership of the AP will even purchase new safe devices for its employees to facilitate their transition to other brands. It is also reported that employees of regional offices will also receive similar recommendations.
The internal political bloc of the Presidential Administration includes four departments dealing with domestic policy, public projects, ensuring the activities of the State Council and the development of information technologies and communications. Employees of the first three departments will prepare for the presidential elections in 2024, as previously reported by Kommersant.
According to sources, the requirement to replace the iPhone is due to security concerns, as, in their opinion, these gadgets are more vulnerable to hacking attacks and espionage compared to other smartphones. One of the interlocutors also added that the AP employees were recommended to purchase phones with Android operating systems, Chinese counterparts or the Russian Aurora OS developed by Open Mobile Platform, a subsidiary of PJSC Rostelecom.
It should be noted that since the end of last year, the Russian government has been discussing with market participants the prospects for building a sovereign mobile ecosystem in Russia based on technologies independent of Western IT giants. OS “Aurora” was developed in this context.
