In the dispute between Cardiff City and Nantes over payment for the transfer (€17 million) of Emiliano Sala, who tragically died in a plane crash on January 21, 2019, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Nantes this Friday. Cardiff disputed the validity of the transfer agreement.

The Welsh club turned to CAS after an appeal in the fall of 2019 following a decision by FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee. She considered that Cardiff had to pay 6 million euros at FC Nantes, a sum “corresponding to the first installment due in accordance with the transfer agreement concluded between the parties on January 19, 2019 (i.e. two days before the player’s death). »

Before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the hearing lasted two days in early March 2022.

Cardiff City said it was “disappointed” with the CAS decision. “Once the club’s lawyers have analyzed the reasons for the decision, we plan to appeal and will not make any payments to Nantes in the meantime.”says the Welsh club in a press release. He adds : “If this appeal is unsuccessful and the club is forced to pay the transfer fee, the club will take legal action against those responsible for the accident to obtain compensation. This will also concern FC Nantes and its representatives. »
