Eight teenage girls have been charged with the murder of a 59-year-old Toronto man in what police are calling a “gang attack.”
A man was found stabbed Sunday shortly after 12:00 p.m. after reports of an attack near York Street and University Avenue. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Authorities are not releasing the man’s name pending notification from the family.
Eight girls were found shortly after the attack, taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. This was announced on Tuesday at a press conference by Terry Brown, an employee of the Homicide Investigation Department of the Toronto Police Service.
According to the Toronto Police Service, three girls are 13, three are 14 and two are 16.
A group of teenagers “got to know each other through social media. They live in different parts of the city,” said Brown.
“We don’t know how or why they met that evening or why the destination was downtown Toronto,” the police added.
Brown said he wouldn’t call a group of girls a “gang”. The girls were also found to have several weapons.
The three girls have already had “prior contact” with police, Brown said.
