Eight Chinese snooker players suspected of match-fixing

The World Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) on December 23 decided to suspend Chinese snooker player Chen Zifan from participation in the World Snooker Tour tournaments with immediate effect.
The corresponding message with reference to the chairman of the association Jason Ferguson was posted on the official website of the organization. This decision is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of match result manipulation for betting purposes in violation of the WPBSA Code of Conduct.
Thus, Zifan became the eighth Chinese snooker player who was suspended from WPBSA tournaments due to a match-fixing investigation.
On December 12, for the same reason, Yan Bingtao, the 16th number in the WPBSA world ranking, was suspended. The decision shocked many fans and his colleagues, as Bingtao has already won major tournaments and made a name for himself in snooker, according to snooker.by.
Among the other suspended are mostly young and little-known Chinese players. On October 27, 2022, Liang Wenbo, who had already gained popularity, was the first to be removed. His reputation soured after it became known that he had beaten a woman in Sheffield. Then he was suspended for four months, but later the WPBSA announced a new suspension of Wenbo, due to suspicion of match-fixing.
During the investigation, one of the disqualified Chinese snooker players, Chang Bingyu, accused Wenbo of involving him in a fraudulent scheme through threats. In particular, Bingyu claimed that Wenbo ordered him to lose a match 4-1 to Jamie Jones at the British Open.
Chan gained professional status for the 2019 World Snooker Tour after topping the Chinese amateur rankings that year.
