Egypt has decided to close the last operating checkpoint on the border with the Gaza Strip. According to The Washington Post, Egyptian authorities have suspended the operation of a point in the city of Rafah, which is located on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. They also stopped the Taba checkpoint on the border with Israel.
The National News reports that the Egyptians have stepped up military patrols along the border with the Gaza Strip. Such measures were taken due to fears in Cairo that Palestinians could flee to the Sinai Peninsula as a result of attacks on the Gaza Strip.
As the newspaper notes, the Rafah checkpoint was the last remaining entry point into the Gaza Strip for medical aid, food and fuel for generators, as well as other necessary goods after the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
Previously, the Israeli authorities ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off the supply of water, electricity, and blocking the supply of food and fuel.
