Ecologist Medvedkov said that the Kakhovka desert resembles the toxic Aralkum

The Kakhovka reservoir, which has become significantly shallower, can be compared to a toxic desert similar to the Aral Sea, and the spread of dust can threaten various regions of Russia, said an ecologist and associate professor at the Department of Physical Geography of the World and Geoecology of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Alexey Medvedkov.

He noted that the exposure of bottom sediments in the Kakhovka reservoir is a serious problem, and such areas can be called the Kakhovskaya desert, which will generate dust and carry pollutants over long distances, similar to the Aralkum. The negative consequences of this situation may affect dozens of Russian regions and appear gradually.

Previously, Medvedkov called the full descent of the Kakhovka reservoir a “chemical bomb” because the bottom sediments at its bottom contain various pollutants that can spread to flooded areas.

The Kakhovka reservoir was damaged after a series of attacks by Ukrainian troops on the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in early June, which led to unregulated water discharge and flooding of the coastal areas of the Kherson region. The destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was associated with the intention to deprive Crimea of ​​water, and this act was condemned by the President of Russia and called a large-scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.
