Flooding in the Kherson region after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station may lead to an increase in fish catch in the western part of the Black Sea. This opinion of RIA Novosti was expressed by an ecologist, associate professor of the Department of Physical Geography of the World and Geoecology of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Alexey Medvedkov.
According to him, one of the paradoxical consequences of the flood can be an increase in the biological productivity of aquatic ecosystems. There is a possibility that the fish catch in the western part of the Black Sea will increase.
He cited the floods in China in 1998 and 2010 as examples. The spill of the Yangtze River there has caused a sharp increase in commercial catches in the East China Sea.
However, the question of the quality of such biological resources is still open, the expert added.
