EC disappointed with decision not to include Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen area

The European Commission is disappointed with the decision of the Council of the European Union not to include Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen area, said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.
“I am disappointed with this decision. But the European Commission must remain optimistic, we will continue our efforts, this will be our priority. We hope to achieve the entry of these countries before the end of our mandate,” said Johansson (quote according to RIA Novosti).
She stressed that, according to the European Commission, Bulgaria and Romania have long deserved entry into the Schengen area.
The Council of the EU at the level of Interior Ministers previously approved the entry of Croatia into the Schengen area from January 1. The press service of the European Parliament reminded that Croatia fulfilled all the conditions for joining the Schengen area in December 2021. In this regard, the MEPs called on the Council of the European Union to accept the country into the Schengen area.
At the moment, the Schengen area includes 26 states. In 2018, MEPs called for Croatia to be accepted into the Schengen area as soon as it meets the necessary conditions. In October 2022, they also announced that Bulgaria and Romania should join the Schengen area. As noted today by Reuters, Austria is against the accession of these two countries, fearing unauthorized migration.
