Vladimir Putin personally awarded the participants of a special operation in Ukraine for the first time. On the occasion of the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland, which is celebrated
December 9, Gold Stars from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief received 10 military personnel in the rank from corporal to colonel. The details of their feats are not reported. Putin stressed that all the awardees showed exceptional valor and courage, but, in his opinion, heroes are all those who are on the front line.
Heroes of the Fatherland Day began to be celebrated in Russia in 2007, but the honoring ceremony appeared only 6 years later on the personal initiative of Vladimir Putin. Before the pandemic, it was held in the format of a gala reception in the Kremlin, where about 300 people gathered at the laid tables in anticipation of the presidential toast – Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of Russia, full holders of the Orders of Glory and St. George, as well as prominent officials of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff. In 2020 and 2021, due to epidemiological measures, the celebration was limited to video congratulations. And in 2022, the scenario changed: tables and champagne disappeared. But a large number of people appeared, to whom the Supreme Commander-in-Chief decided to personally present the Golden Stars of the Heroes of Russia. All of them, as Putin explained, showed exceptional valor and courage during a special military operation. However, in the conditions of real hostilities, the concept of heroism, in his opinion, is much broader. “I want to appeal to everyone who is on the front line: for me, for all our fellow citizens, each of you is a hero,” he said.
The President outlined the continuity between the heroes of previous wars and the participants in the special military operation. He also expressed confidence that future generations, if necessary, will join these ranks. “I am sure that the fate and exploits of the heroes of the Fatherland serve as the most important moral guide for the majority of citizens of the country,” he said. Such people, according to VVP, are distinguished by “a clear inner understanding of what values to uphold and defend, how to act in difficult, extreme situations.” They “live with higher meanings” and “higher ideals”, so the natural sense of self-preservation for every person in combat conditions “goes by the wayside for them.” Eternal memory awaits those who, fulfilling their duty, died, and Putin wished health and well-being to those who are being treated after being wounded.
Each of the heroes, going out for a star, said the same phrase: “Comrade Supreme Commander-in-Chief, such and such (surname and rank) arrived for the award.” However, some considered it necessary to convey their understanding of what was happening to the President. Colonel of the Russian Guard Sergei Belozerov, without going into details of the accomplished feat, said that the security forces during the NMD perform “difficult combat missions, often critically dangerous.” However, “corresponding combat and special training makes their work effective.” He assured that the troops and forces of the National Guard will continue to do their job, and “in what ways and in what measures, the situation will show.” Lieutenant Colonel of the Airborne Troops Sergei Ishtuganov drew a direct parallel between the Northern Military District and the Second World War: both 80 years ago and now we are talking about a merciless struggle for the Russian world against Nazi evil spirits, the soldier believes. David Malyikin, Corporal of the Airborne Assault Division of the Airborne Forces, added another touch to the ideology of the NVO: according to him, the “Nazi contagion” is trying to divide the Russian and Ukrainian peoples and “make our common history insignificant.” All those awarded promised the Supreme Commander not to disgrace the memory of their ancestors and to fulfill their duty to the Motherland. Some ended their speeches with the words of Molotov, uttered on the day of the attack of fascist Germany on the USSR: “The enemy will be defeated, victory will be ours.”
In addition to the participants of the NWO, the Stars of Heroes were also received by Russian test cosmonauts. However, ironically, the name of one of them again referred to what was happening on the front line: the medal was awarded to the 123rd space explorer Ivan Wagner.
