The Russian Football Union (RFU) retains the possibility of moving to the Asian Football Confederation, but continues to consult with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). This was announced to journalists by the President of the RFU Alexander Dyukov.

“We are continuing consultations with UEFA, we are not yet commenting on the course of these consultations. The possibility of moving to Asia exists, and if we implement it, then by agreement with UEFA,” Mr. Dyukov said in a conversation with reporters (quoted from “RIA News”).

Earlier today, the adviser to the head of UEFA for national associations, Josef Kliment, expressed confidence that Russian clubs and teams will soon be able to meet with rivals in international matches. FIFA spokeswoman Heidi Beha said the federation thanks the RFU for their cooperation.

March 31 Alexander Dyukov declaredthat RFU puts its goal is to return to Europe, but retains the option of moving to Asia. In December 2022, the RFU discussed a possible move to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). At the same time, together with UEFA, it was decided to create a working group, the purpose of which is to develop a “road map” for the speedy return of Russian teams to international tournaments.

In the spring of 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian teams from participating in tournaments. An attempt by the RFU to challenge these decisions in the Court of Arbitration for Sport was unsuccessful. In September, UEFA did not allow the Russian team to the draw for the qualifying tournament of the European Championship-2024. No decision has yet been made on the 2026 World Championship.
