FIDE head Dvorkovich announces open match between Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren for the world crown
President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich announced the match for the chess crown between Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia) and Ding Liren (PRC) as open.
The match for the title of world champion will be held in Astana from April 9 to May 1. Nepomniachtchi won the right to play for the chess crown by winning the Candidates Tournament. He was supposed to fight again with the current world champion Magnus Carlsen, but the Norwegian, citing a lack of motivation, refused to defend the title.
The Russian’s opponent was the Chinese Ding Liren – he was second in the Candidates Tournament.
“Both have been waiting for this event all their lives,” Dvorkovich said in his greeting. “They will show all their talent and skills to win this title.”
The Minister of Sports and Culture of Kazakhstan, Askhat Oralov, read out the congratulations of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the opening of the duel between the Russian and the Chinese. The Kazakh leader called the match that started a long-awaited event for all chess fans. He thanked FIDE for “organizing such an event in our country”.
